HOW DRU CATCH SEES IT
The Review Nobody Requested
The audition nobody scheduled just got a scathing review from a judge who was never on the panel. David Umahi, Nigeria's Minister of Works, has declared Peter Obi is not the South-East's best presidential option - and in practically the same breath explained the actual entry requirement: any candidate must first consult 'people like us.' The argument isn't about talent. It's about who holds the clipboard.
The Consultation Tollgate
That detail does a lot of work. Umahi says he would consult widely if he ran. He also says Obi 'can never be the best.' The logic runs like a regional tollgate: no one passes without paying the political toll to the sitting governors. The South-East's democratic future, it turns out, is a members-only audition with a very small judging panel.
When the Judges Are Also Contestants
There is a real and fair debate to be had about whether a presidential candidate should build regional consensus before launching a national campaign. But Umahi's framing tips the hand. The complaint is less about coalition-building and more about who gets to issue the permission slip. When the gatekeepers announce they are also potential candidates, the talent show stops being about talent.

THE COMMENTS SECTION HAS ENTERED THE CHAT
Should presidential candidates be required to get approval from regional political leaders before running, or does that kind of "consensus-building" requirement simply hand veto power to the gatekeepers themselves?
