HOW DRU CATCH SEES IT
The Boldest Abstention in Romanian History
PNL has invented a political maneuver so audacious it deserves its own entry in the textbook: vote your sworn rivals into the Interior Ministry, the Justice Ministry and the Deputy Prime Minister's office, then pivot to the cameras and announce you are the opposition. The logic, apparently, is that if your hand isn't physically inside the government's cookie jar, you can't be blamed for emptying it.
Liberal deputy Mircea Fechet road-tested this argument on Wednesday with a straight face: support the Cabinet installation to end political instability, then oppose the PSD afterward. In the same breath. As a plan. PSD, meanwhile, skipped the nuance entirely and just took 11 of the 19 seats, including Marian Neacșu at Internal Affairs and Radu Marinescu at Justice. The door was opened; they moved the furniture in.

Opposition by Proxy
The two-step goes like this. Step one: deliver 81 crucial parliamentary votes - enough to substantially swing the 233-vote investiture threshold - so that PSD controls more than half the Cabinet. Step two: sit back, declare yourself the opposition, and wait for the other side to fumble. It is, technically, a strategy. It is also the kind of strategy that works perfectly until your own colleagues read it out loud.
Several PNL deputies and party supporters had already begun expressing discomfort publicly before Saturday's meeting. Dragoș Ciobotaru went further and announced he would argue against the vote in its current formula. USR had already committed to voting against. The intra-party revolt is the most honest peer review the plan has received, and it arrived before a single ballot was cast.
The Door, the Key and the Protest Sign
What makes this a genuinely spectacular contradiction is not the political calculation itself - coalition horse-trading is as old as parliament - but the specific identity claim attached to it. PNL built its recent brand on being the non-PSD option. The plan now asks voters to accept that handing PSD Interior, Justice, Health, Agriculture and the Deputy Prime Ministership is compatible with that positioning, provided PNL technically keeps its ministers out of the building.
The party's own members are not buying it, and that is the tell. When your most credible critics are sitting inside your own caucus, the argument has a structural problem that no Saturday BPN meeting vote is going to quietly fix.

Can a political party credibly claim opposition status after voting to install a government dominated by its stated rival - or does casting that vote permanently compromise the claim?
