HOW DRU CATCH SEES IT

The Open Door With a Locked Floor

Putin's peace offer works like a restaurant that welcomes new customers but has already sold the kitchen. He is publicly ready to talk, as long as nobody mentions the part where Ukraine wants its land back. That is not an opening position at a negotiating table. That is a bouncer with a clipboard explaining that the guest list is already final.

The specific absurdity is not that Russia wants favorable terms - every party to every conflict does. The absurdity is calling it readiness for talks while simultaneously declaring that the main subject of any talk is off the table entirely. In May, the Kremlin's own spokesman named full Ukrainian withdrawal from Donbas, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson as the only condition for peace. Putin's October interview added 'historical Russia' as the philosophical underpinning of that demand.

The Genetics of a Negotiating Position

Putin also cited unnamed genetic studies, which independent outlet Meduza noted are unspecified, to argue that Ukrainians and Russians are one people - and linked that claim directly to Russia's readiness to negotiate. That framing is doing a lot of work. If the people on the other side of the table are genetically you, then their territory is presumably also yours, and the talks are really just an internal family meeting about inheritance.

He made the same historical-unity argument in his 12 July 2021 essay, which Ukraine's national memory institute formally rebutted at the time. Recycling a rebutted essay as the intellectual basis for a fresh peace offer is an unusual diplomatic move. It is the rhetorical equivalent of showing up to mediation with a document the other side already rejected and explaining that you have thought about it more since then.

The Abu Dhabi Gap

The real negotiating distance is not subtle. Zelenskyy said Ukraine would freeze along the current front line - ceding de facto control of roughly a quarter of its internationally recognized territory. Moscow's last stated position, per the Kremlin's own May statement, demanded Ukrainian forces withdraw from land Russia currently occupies but does not fully control. That is not a gap to be bridged by agreeing on a venue. That is two parties agreeing to meet at a restaurant where one of them has already eaten the table.

Putin closed his interview by asserting Russia would achieve all the goals of its military operation regardless of any talks - a statement he made in almost identical terms on 17 December 2025. Readiness to talk, insistence that occupied land is non-negotiable, and a vow to achieve every military objective is a combination that has a specific technical name in diplomacy. That name is not a ceasefire proposal.
