Editorial cartoon: a uniformed NRC official at a podium triumphantly holds a blank safety pledge scroll aloft while a slot machine on the podium's side ejects identical blank scrolls into an overflowing bucket; through the station window behind him, a derailed jackknifed train with overturned coaches sits on an embankment; waiting passengers with curling timetables and a cobwebbed turnstile fill the foreground.

Nigeria Built the Railway in 33 Years. The Safety Pledge Takes About 33 Seconds.

Nigeria's Itakpe-Warri railway took 33 years to build and was commissioned in 2020. The NRC has issued near-identical safety pledges after every suspension and derailment, while a fatal June 2026 crash still has no definitive cause and the investigation remains ongoing.
