HOW DRU CATCH SEES IT
ChatGPT Writes the Laws. Romania Votes on Them. Moving On.
There is a very specific kind of political courage required to tell the public that your colleagues have outsourced their entire legislative brains to a chatbot - and then, in the same breath, propose mandatory psychological fitness tests for those colleagues. USR deputy Brian Cristian managed it. One interview, one man, two ideas that quietly detonate each other on contact.
The core absurdity is not that Romanian MPs are using AI. Half the world is. The absurdity is the sequencing. First, Cristian describes a parliament where laws governing millions of Romanian citizens may have arrived fully formed from a language model. Then he pivots to demanding that the humans nominally responsible for those laws be screened for mental fitness and drug impairment. The urine sample, in other words, is being collected from the person who already handed the pen to the machine.

Testing for Mental Fitness When Mental Participation Was Already Optional
What exactly is a psychological test measuring at this point? Cristian wants proof that his colleagues are mentally present - which is a reasonable ask - but he has just explained that mental presence is optional. If ChatGPT is handling the drafting 'almost entirely,' the human brain involved is performing roughly the same cognitive function as a printer. You can test the printer. It will not clarify the authorship problem.
The double standard is structural, not personal. Romania did not elect a server farm. It elected people who, according to one of their own number, may have been submitting AI-generated texts as their own legislative work. A drug test confirms that the body behind the signature is clean. It says nothing about whether the signature means anything.
Autopilot with a Clean Fitness Certificate Is Still Autopilot
To be fair to Cristian, naming the problem openly is more than most elected officials manage. But the proposed fix targets the symptom's host while leaving the symptom fully operational. Mandatory sobriety checks for a parliament where the legislation may already be running on autopilot is the political equivalent of requiring the co-pilot to pass a fitness exam after the plane has been flying itself for three hours and no one is quite sure who programmed the route.
Romanian voters elected humans to write their laws. One of those humans now says colleagues may have already stopped doing that - and his remedy is to verify the humans are sober enough to press approve. At some point the audit should probably include the chatbot's output, not just the bladder of the person who hit submit.

If a law is drafted almost entirely by an AI tool and approved by a human lawmaker, who is accountable for its consequences - and would drug-testing the lawmaker change that answer at all?
