HOW DRU CATCH SEES IT

The Receipt Nobody Asked For

The man who ran on making everything cheaper has presided over a 3.7% annual price increase and is now barnstorming the country asking voters to reward the party that delivered it. That is not a campaign - that is a receipt stapled to a thank-you card.

Trump's tariffs, per the New York Fed, added 2.9 percentage points to consumer-goods inflation. The whole theory was that foreign exporters would eat the cost. Instead, domestic producers raised prices too because - surprise - when you remove the competition, the remaining players don't hold a charity sale. American-made goods got more expensive under tariffs designed to protect American-made goods. The policy's own success metric is its failure metric.

Every Gauge in the Store Points Up Except the Campaign Slogan

Gasoline jumped 9.1% in a single month. Diesel is dragging grocery prices, shipping costs, and building materials along for the ride. The shelter index climbed 3.2%. Electricity up 4.4%. Natural gas up 5%. The one bright spot - groceries dipped 0.1% in September - is the economic equivalent of finding a quarter in your couch while your house is on fire.

A Calculator-Proof Campaign

The White House argues tariffs will strengthen manufacturing and that foreign exporters bear the costs. The New York Fed's own numbers say otherwise. But sure, keep campaigning on the economy. When your signature trade policy adds nearly three full percentage points to inflation and your answer is "vote for more of this," you are not running on results. You are running on the assumption that nobody owns a calculator.
