HOW DRU CATCH SEES IT

Pay-Per-View Patriotism Gets Its Refund

Donald Trump decided the world needed appointment viewing of a military firing squad, promoted the concept as a deterrent for terrorists and - his word - SCUM, then scrapped the broadcast roughly one news cycle after the entire planet told him it was monstrous. His stated reason for the reversal: many well-meaning people would rather not watch a man die. That is not an epiphany. That is a focus group returning unanimous results you could have predicted by asking literally anyone who has met a human being. The United Nations called the plan abhorrent. Amnesty International pointed out that only Iran and Afghanistan carried out public executions in 2025. JD Vance - the vice-president - pre-emptively announced he would not watch. When your own understudy won't sit through the dress rehearsal, the show has a problem the marketing department cannot fix.

Hegseth Defended a Broadcast the Army's Own Rules Forbade

Pete Hegseth told reporters people needed to understand there are serious consequences for acts like Hasan's, which is a fine sentence right up until you learn the Army's own regulations already prohibited what the Pentagon had announced. Hasan's lawyer, John Galligan, called the initial decision dumb and said it violated existing military rules - meaning the Defence Secretary spent days publicly championing a production his own department was never authorised to air. After Trump pulled the plug, a Pentagon spokesman assured the press that Hegseth and the president were completely aligned. Of course they were. A weathervane is always aligned with the wind; that is the entire design.

The Curtain Closed but the Bullets Are Still Loaded

The retreat was not a rethinking of state violence as spectacle. It was the discovery that the ratings projections looked like shit. Trump framed the cancellation as sensitivity toward the well-meaning, then immediately reminded everyone that Hasan would still die by firing squad as scheduled and that families could attend in person - the rhetorical equivalent of pulling the curtain shut while loudly racking the bolt. The execution was never the controversy. Converting it into content was the controversy. And the reversal converted the reversal into content. The whole affair was a trailer for a show cancelled after a single promo, except the finale still happens, just without the live audience the president personally invited and then uninvited while insisting it would have been tremendous television.
